I am working on a series of oil on canvas paintings that focus on eyes. I am particularly fond of this series so far. I have always been a fan of Renoir’s paintings. As a young man, I was fascinated by “Luncheon of the Boating Party” at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. I have spent hours viewing this painting. I am captivated by the eyes, glances, and emotions of all the people (and the dog) in this painting! I have been particularly inspired by the Renoir paintings at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA and at the Barnes Art Collection in Philadelphia.
Renoir's paintings are often noted for the expressive quality of the eyes that appear to jump off the canvas. He was particularly skilled at capturing the gaze of his subjects, conveying emotions and personality through their eyes. Renoir's technique involved using broken brushstrokes and vibrant colors to create a sense of light and movement, which further enhanced the impact of his subjects' eyes.
While I am not trying to replicate Renoir’s technique, I want to elicit similar responses from viewers with my new canvases.
I have selected titles of my paintings that recall films that inspire my style:
"Here’s Looking at You, Kid”
"Fasten Your Seatbelts, It’s Going to Be a Bumpy Night”
Bette Davis and Ingrid Bergman are two women with penetrating and expressive eyes. I started working on this series of paintings in the summer of 2025. Watch this space for more images in the near future!
